During a long stay in Japan, Noni Lazaga came in contact with the master papermakers of Mino, a small Japanese town located in Gifu prefecture.
For a year she studied the materials and techniques with the artisans, introducing some of them in her own artwork.
Because of the lack of information, especially in Spanish, about Japanese paper elaboration and raw materials, for three years she devotes part of her time to write this book as an exhaustive diary. The book addresses the history, origins, basis and elaboration of a material wrongly known in the West as rice paper. Three samples of handmade paper are included to show the main materials used. The key objective of this volume is to get the message both to the experts specifically interested in paper and to the people interested in Japanese culture, showing the importance of an element that goes beyond the artistic and architectonic sphere and having a place in Japanese daily life and unexpected uses for other cultures. |
